This would involve the famous maxim of ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ where we would ideally be choosing products with minimal packaging, opting for cruelty-free and vegan options, using natural and organic ingredients, recycling empty containers, and supporting brands that prioritize sustainability in their production processes. By including these values into your brand, you too can help care for the planet as you care for your skin.

At Toya we believe that creating a sustainable system for environmentally friendly products is an opportunity for us to grow. That is why our research and development lab is always working on improving our products alongside sustainability for the Earth. Right now, we are making body scrub products from ground avocado seeds. Rather than letting this ‘waste product’ rot in the landfill, we gave avocado seeds an extra life by using it as an essential component for a new product. This is one of the various projects we are tackling as part of Toya’s zero-waste commitment. Thanks to our R&D lab, we are always creating sustainable yet quality products.

Sourcing

Sustainable sourcing for products refers to the practice of obtaining ingredients and materials in a way that minimizes negative impacts on the environment and supports social responsibility.

This can be done by sourcing from suppliers who prioritize ethical labor practices, use environmentally-friendly farming methods, and promote biodiversity conservation. Sustainable sourcing also includes considerations such as natural or organic certifications, and cruelty-free certifications for not only the finished products but also the individual ingredients that is used in the process.

Considering how each person would purchase a new bottle or jar for each individual product they use every few months, the waste produced from the leftover packaging alone causes a significant impact to the environment. Improving this situation can be done by the following methods:

Recyclable materials: Using packaging materials that are easily recyclable, such as glass, aluminum, or cardboard, can help reduce the environmental impact of products instead of the traditional plastic and hybrid materials that produces a lot of trash in landfills. These materials can be recycled or reused multiple times, minimizing waste and conserving resources.

Biodegradable materials: Choosing packaging materials that are biodegradable, such as compostable plastics or plant-based materials, can help reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills. These materials break down naturally over time, reducing their impact on the environment. Biodegradable plastics also create less climate emissions to produce than traditional plastics.

Minimalist design: Simplifying packaging design by using less material and reducing excess packaging can help minimize waste and energy consumption during production and transportation. Minimalist packaging can also be more visually appealing and convey a sense of luxury and sophistication.

Reuse: One way to reduce waste is by upcycling empty containers into new and useful items. Empty jars can be repurposed as storage containers for small items, while bottles can be used as vases or planters. By upcycling packaging, you can give them a new life and reduce waste.

Upcycle ingredients: Another method of reducing waste and creating added value to a material is by using ‘waste’ products from another industry or production line and incorporating them into a new product. This reduces waste and encourages innovation and research for novel ingredients.

We think all businesses should be good for the people working in them and the environment they are a part of. Just ask our Moringa farmers in Sumba.

As partners, we mentor and support the local farmers throughout the planting and tending process of the Moringa plant. We help monitor the harvesting period for optimal yield. Then, we bring the harvested seeds to our plant to produce the optimal first, cold-pressed Moringa seed oil.

By building a local Moringa oil operation, we have provided consistent income for the farmers and workers in Sumba. It helps their families to thrive and empowers the community to grow economically.
